Episode 22: Podcasting with Skype
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 1:01:53 — 56.7MB)
Today we start the journey into podcasting with Skype. Skype is a voice-over-IP service that allows you to phone others via the internet. This technology is also very useful in connecting remote hosts, conferencing in multiple hosts, or bringing caller feedback into your show.
The ways of connecting Skype to your podcast are many and varied, so today we’ll start with the basic principles and a few services that are available for PC. We plan to have a Mac/Skype episode soon, but because neither Dave or James use a Mac regularly we wanted to wait until we had a specialist lined up to tackle those options.
In this show you can expect to get a good run down of Skype and how to connect, as well as a few tips and tricks to help fast-track you towards your first Skype podcast.

Our new Podcasters’ Emporium 30 second bumper
We’d love for you to play our 30 second Podcasters’ Emporium bumper in your show. Let us know when you do, so we can mention you and your podcast on Podcasters’ Emporium

Good job guys! Just a note on recording skype calls, I use CallGraph instead of MX SkypeRecorder or Pamela because it’s free and doesn’t have the 5 minute limit. It just does one thing and one thing only, in that it simply records the inbound/outbound audio as stereo tracks in a wav file. Just thought people might like another option if they want to be cheapskates and are just trying to get a feel for creating podcasts.

I haven’t got a podcast yet, but I’m gathering all the info I can. You guys are so thorough.
I’ve never heard such an in-depth, yet easy to understand, talk about Skype. Thanks for all the prep you put into your episodes. I love all you do and look forward to many more eps ahead!

Hi guys
Thought I’d add my 5 cents worth in on Skype as a person who has done many interviews and live shows (with up to 8 people at a time on one conference).
In the settings options, I would untick the box that says “let Skype control my audio”. That was a trick that I learnt through bitter experience ages ago.
In addition, check *every time* that Skype’s audio is routed correctly, especially if you have a USB mixer and you take the plug out each time. Even if I save my preferences and do not take out my USB cord to the interface, Skype has a bad habit of not remembering my settings each time.
And this one is probably a style choice over anything but I would suggest that you turn off all your Skype noises. That’s one of the things that I love about how James & Dave podcast – you do not know that they are podcasting 800km apart (most of the time) because you don’t hear the various Skype noises like ringing and the “fishtank noise”, too. While many people would know that I am calling these people via Skype (especially in a live setting), I don’t want to make it obvious.
Also, if you can run Skype with a direct connection to your interweb (not wi-fi) if you can. Earlier versions of Skype (not sure about the current one) can be flaky on wi-fi.
I also need to follow this next one myself – if the call connection is not good at the start of the call, hang up and try again. Often a fresh connection is all you need. I must remember to do this one myself.
I think that will do for now except to say to Dave to get better soon and hopefully we’ll hear The Underscore Rooster at full noise again very soon!

Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions! We had a lot to cover in this episode! Firstly @Richard, thanks for the suggestion of Call Graph. I have used it before but I was not overly impressed with the quality – If you can get good quality from it that’s great – I also tried it when it first came out. Second the waveform was IMHO ugly :P But whatever works and what you know gets results is what is important and I think it is good that people have choices – something I did not have when I started!
@Lin welcome and we are so very pleased that the show is helping you and that the information is easy to understand and pick up – that’s the idea! Please let us know when you start your podcast so we can mention it on the show!
@Erk thanks mate – as always good info from yourself who has done more podcasts than any of us put together! We did mention to turn off the “Let Skype Adjust my Audio” but as we have discovered in the past: Skype sometimes has it’s own ideas about audio settings and adjusts them without you asking it to :( HOT TIP: Because of the way these software and recording solutions work; the way to eliminate Skype’s noises and notifications is to put your status into DND. All noises are muted and therefore not recorded :)
Thanks Jeff and Zendead for your wishes and so far so good – the preliminary report is negative (that’s good) – we are just waiting on the second due this week coming.
Hope you sorted out your podcast plugin!!
Thanks so much for listening and commenting on the show we appreciate the support and continued encouragement from all of you!

Hey dave and james, loved the episode. Me and my friend are going to be commenting on some gaming videos and instead of skype we are going to be talking to each other on xbox live (online game service) and we record at our end with a video camera. Then we are going to send each other the files and sync them together. Its gonna work wonderfully.
Thanks for the info cheers.
